Becoming a Member

Many people begin attending Quaker Meeting, find a spiritual home here, and become an active, important part of our community. Such persons are termed “attenders.” We encourage attenders who have become familiar with our faith and practice to apply for membership when so led. Membership signifies a deeper commitment to the Meeting and a deeper commitment of the Meeting to the member.  Some people choose to remain attenders for an extended period of time for various reasons.  Membership does not convey many practical advantages (ie eligibility to serve as clerk); it conveys mostly spiritual advantages of feeling more commitment to and from the Meeting.

Applying for membership is not difficult. Simply write and send a letter to the clerk stating your desire to become a member. Your letter does not need to be lengthy or complicated. The clerk will arrange for the Ministry and Worship Committee to appoint a clearness committee to meet with you and discuss your desire to become a member. The committee will confer and pass their recommendation on for consideration at the next meeting for business.  The recommendation is usually always a positive one accompanied by great joy. The meeting for business will note the recommendation and encourage members of the meeting to get to know you better in the coming month. The recommendation will be brought up at the following meeting for business when final approval will be sought and when approved will be greeted again with great joy.
